Daily Shot
Daily Shot is National Geographic Traveller India’s daily photo contest.
"THEME : CULTURAL EXCHANGES"
Jew Town, the narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the 16th-century Paradesi Synagogue in Kochi, is lined with shops selling spices, antiques and Keralan crafts. "It is a colourful reminder of the area's once-strong Cochin Jewish community, whose numbers have dwindled considerably over the years," writes Pranav Pandya, who trains his lens on the neighbourhood for today's daily shot.
Mumbai's Dadar Parsi Colony, peppered with sprawling gardens and old buildings, is the largest Zoroastrian enclave of Persians in the world. Eden Fernandes's photograph of an old man cycling through the colony's sleepy lanes is our submission for today's daily shot.
In Bangkok's Yaowarat, Chinese communities come alive with music, dancing, and beautifully lit lanterns that paint the skies red. Bransha Gautier's portrait of a woman holding a golden bowl is from one of the largest Chinatowns in the world where immigrant influence on the host's culture has a long history.
The heart of Kolkata's Tiretta Bazaar has been home to the Chinese immigrant community for a long time. Visible markers like Kali temples, food processing industries (ketchups) and breakfast stops captures the confluence of Indo-Chinese cultures. Arita Bhowmik frames a ketchup shop for his Daily Shot entry.
Debmalya Das's entry today spotlights the Baghdadi Jewish community of Kolkata. Pictured is a merchant offering prayers at the Maghen David Synagogue of the Barabazar Market.
Kampong Glam—Singapore's Malay neighbourhood—comes alive after dusk like a vivid colour wheel. Sandip Dey's capture of Haji Lane, a food paradise, is the region's top draw and our feature for #CulturalExhanges.
Stuti Shrimali's shot of Little India in Singapore is our feature for the day. The small pocket rings with temple bells, lanes host shoppers and a clear exchange of traditions and ideas sit at the centre. Pictured is the colourful Race Road, lined with chain hotel Delhi-6 and Tamil eateries.
Today's entry is from Mcleodganj's Little Lhasa. Chandan Kathua spotlights the Tibetan refugee community and frames Buddhist monks in prayer at the Namgyal Gompa of the Tsuglagkhang complex—the headquarters of the Tibetan government-in-exile & the official residence of the Dalai Lama.
Our inaugural shot is Shubhodeep Roy's photograph of the Kabuliwala community in Kolkata. Captured in July 2021, Roy recalls coming across the large Afghan community at the Maidan area enjoying picnics after Eid and playing cricket on a bright Sunday.
Novice monks run around in the courtyard of a monastery at Bylakuppe, Karnataka. The Tibetan settlement was established several decades ago, and is the largest outside Tibet, after Dharamshala. The settlement is populated by around 70,000 Tibetans in exile.
