How do you take the perfect travel picture? This year’s winners of the Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) contest distil moments that are as serene as a painting—from powerful portraits of China’s Yi people to fishermen sewing a sea of nets in Vietnam. Click through to see stunning drone photos of the salt pans of Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. There’s an entry from India too: Ankit Kumar’s picture of flamingoes in Tanzania that won the 14 and Under category.

A selection of the winning photos will be on display at the UK City of Culture celebrations in Hull from May 17-June 30, 2017, and in London’s University of Greenwich from August 4-September 2017.
