Still waiting for that letter by owl from Hogwarts? Feel like finding Platform 9 and 3/4 is like punching through a brick wall? Take a deep breath. Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry might be within reach—if you can make it to Philadelphia, U.S.A. by October. On Fri October 21-Sat October 22, 2016, the city will host the annual Harry Potter Festival and Quidditch Tournament.
Every October, the Philadelphia neighbourhood of Chestnut Hill transforms into miniature versions of wizarding town Hogsmeade and magical haunt Diagon Alley, complete with Madame Puddifoot’s Tea Shoppe, the Tri-Wizard Straw Maze labyrinth, and cauldron stores.
The magic begins when witches and wizards board the Hogwarts Express from Philadelphia’s Jefferson Station, from where they will be joined by (actors dressed as) Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dumbledore. Once at Chestnut Hill, they may try on the Sorting Hat to find which house they belong to, make potions, practice their spells at Defense Against the Dark Arts classes, and ride through the neighbourhood on the free Knight Bus.
The weekend’s highlights are the Philadelphia Brotherly Love Quidditch Tournament, the Harry Potter Conference at Chestnut Hill College, and the Harry Potter Pub Crawl that promises gallons of butterbeer and other enchanted concoctions.
